Disability Discrimination Act (DDA)

Help with preparing

Continuing our features to help our members to prepare for the final stage of the Disability Discrimination Act which comes into force this year, here are some further points suggested by the English Tourism Council to help improve customer care towards those with disabilities.  On this page, we concentrate in particular on those with dexterity difficulties:

  • Ensure that at least some telephones are available with accessible facilities, i.e. with large buttons, which are easier for people with arthritis and dexterity problems

  • Provide specially adapted crockery and cutlery for guests with limited dexterity

  • Have mugs available for use instead of cups and saucers

  • Use cordless kettles when provided in bedrooms

With the onset of summer, many of us start to suffer from hay fever.  However, some individuals suffer from allergies all the year round.  Their difficulties can be alleviated if you ensure that non-smoking and pet-free rooms are available and that pot pourri and flowers are removed.
